Founders Message

I wanted to say a few words about Strongbox, its history, and the future at its new home with the Applause team.

I started working on Strongbox as my first ever iOS app a very, very long time ago (more than 10 years!). It has obviously grown far beyond my wildest expectations. What originally began as an app purely for my own use, so that I could open those old Password Safe .dat files on my iPhone, has turned into my (and many others) indispensable password manager app. I can remember how “quirky” the UI/UX was initially as I struggled to get to grips with Apple’s design guidelines. The idiosyncrasies of coding in Objective-C were also a real challenge. Over the years Strongbox became my main project, my primary occupation in fact, and eventually we incorporated as Phoebe Code Limited and expanded the team beyond myself. We’ve added lots of features, strived to crush bugs, and to be there for you if you ever needed support. I hope we’ve done that for you and perhaps saved your day once or twice.

However, ten years is a very long time, and, for me personally, it is time to move on to something different. I’ll continue to use Strongbox every day and look forward to the developments and passion the team at Applause will bring. It is hard to maintain motivation for a project for so long and recently I began to feel that Strongbox needed more attention and resources than I could ever hope to bring to it. It has orders of magnitude more users now than what it had even in the last 2 or 3 years and really requires a very dedicated team. Even someone with the most generous imagination in world would struggle to call me a great product manager. I’m a dev at heart. I’m not the right person to properly build out an enterprise like Strongbox. Our users deserve a professional, dedicated team and an enthusiastic and fresh approach. To that end, I am happy to say that after a long search for a new home for Strongbox, we have joined the very capable Applause group. They have the talent and resources to make Strongbox even better, and to provide its users with a better level of service than was previously possible under my leadership.

I’d like to say a very personal thank you to all of our users, and to each person I have interacted with via email or phone or just on social media. We’ve had some (truly) strange bugs to squash, and some very nifty features to introduce mostly due to your feedback. The interactions have almost entirely been super positive and I thank the Strongbox community for a great many years of back and forth, learning and discussion.

Over the coming months, I’ll be taking more of a back seat role as I let the experts at Applause drive the future of Strongbox. Given their extensive experience and their existing portfolio of world class Apps (e.g. Bartender), I’m sure they’re going to do a great job. I’ll be here to advise where necessary but I get the feeling the new team is already more than competent. Once again I’d just like to say thank you all for the journey and I hope you’ll continue to love Strongbox.

Strongbox Joins Applause

Dear Strongbox Community,

Today, we are thrilled to announce a significant milestone in the journey of Strongbox, the password management application trusted by tens of thousands of users across iOS and macOS. After years of working on Strongbox independently, Mark McGuill has made the decision to entrust the future of this exceptional product to our team at Applause.

A letter from Strongbox’s Founder about this development can be found here.

Applause is a team of indie developers who’ve been building iOS and macOS apps since 2010. While we may operate under the radar, you might know us through Nomorobo, our spam call blocking app, or Voice Dream Reader, our text to speech app. We’re based in New York City and are dedicated to being a great home for indie developed apps.

Strongbox has long been one of the best password managers available, built with security-first principles, open-source transparency, and user control at its core. We’ve admired it for years, and now, as its new stewards, our mission is simple: keep Strongbox great and make it even better.

What We Love About Strongbox

We took this step because Strongbox is already exceptional. Some of the things we love:

  • Seamless iOS/macOS integration (Face ID, Touch ID, Safari AutoFill)
  • Best-in-class security (AES-256, strong key derivation, TOTP, YubiKey support)
  • No vendor lock-in (KeePass format, open-source foundation)
  • Flexible sync and offline options (including Strongbox Zero)
  • Customizable password management tools
  • Minimalist, intuitive design

Our goal isn’t to change what makes Strongbox special—it’s to build on it.

What’s Not Changing

We want to reiterate several things that will not change in this transition because we know that’s the most important thing for you:

  • Your data stays yours. Your passwords remain where you stored them, protected by your encryption keys. No migration or conversion is needed.
  • KeePass compatibility stays. We know this is essential, especially for our German users.
  • Local storage and self-hosted sync options stay. WebDAV, SFTP, iCloud, and offline use will remain fully supported.
  • Mark will continue to support us in an advisory capacity, ensuring a seamless transition across the board.

What’s Next: Our Roadmap

With our expanded team and resources, here’s what we’re focusing on:

Near-Term (First 6 Months)

  • Performance & reliability improvements
  • Full support for the latest OS updates and Apple Silicon
  • Fixing sync and AutoFill bugs
  • Better documentation & expanded language support (especially German)

Longer-Term (6-18 Months)

  • Improved biometric & hardware security key support
  • Better offline sync & conflict resolution
  • Advanced password health insights (processed locally on your device)
  • Improved field management & templates

We also want to hear from you. We plan to implement a dedicated feedback portal where users will be able to submit new feature ideas and be able to vote on these ideas to help us learn what the community wants us to build.

What You Can Expect Next

  • No disruptions: Strongbox will continue working exactly as it does today.
  • Meet the Team: We’ll introduce key team members in the next two weeks.
  • Community Engagement: New feedback channels launching soon.
  • First Update Incoming: A bug-fix & optimization release shortly

We know transitions can raise concerns, but our goal is continuity, not disruption. To that end Mark will continue to support us in an advisory capacity, ensuring a seamless transition across the board.

A Collaborative Future

We’re honored to take on Strongbox’s next chapter and deeply respect the trust you place in it. User experience, customer satisfaction and privacy are at the core of everything we do, and we’ll work to earn your confidence through our actions.

Thank you for being part of the Strongbox community—we can’t wait to build the future of this wonderful product together.
